Weird Wednesday - Alternate Ending
By
Jane Royce
"Johnny!" Roy shouted, he knew his partner was rappelling down that hill too fast, but in typical Johnny fashion, he always had to be the hero. Well, the hero was down, and hurting.. That much was obvious......
"We will need two stokes Cap" Shouted Roy to the new crew who had just arrived.
As Roy made his way down tot the bottom of the ravine, he was stricken by the colors of Johnny's knee already, obviously, this was more than a sprain and clearly, he needed to get out of there. This terrain was going to make it tough though.
"Are you all right?" Asked Roy, as he attempted a cursory examination of his partner.
"Yeah, I'm fine, go see who we really came for." Insisted Johnny.
Roy continued the extra ten feet over to the victim, who was seeming trapped in a car which had gone over the cliff. Trapped was a loose term to use though, as he suddenly climbed out and declared "wow, what a ride!"
Clearly, their victim was in no pain and that may have been his saving grace.
Roy watched in amazement as their victim lumbered up the side of the hill unassisted, refusing treatment and giggling while holding a bottle of concealed gin in a brown paper bag.
With little else to offer his 'victim' Roy quickly made it over to Johnny, who was beginning to look pale.
"How are you doing partner, you aren't gonna believe this one!"
"Try me, how did he get out of there alone? I figured you need a team and the Jaws to get him out of there." Johnny stated.
"Nope, he got out of their on his own steam, completely inebriated and feeling no pain at all."
"I can't believe it, he was drunk?" Johnny asked incredulously and began to laugh until Roy prodded his knee which brought about a round of pain..
"Drunk as a skunk, which is I guess how you'd like to be right now with this knee huh?" Chided Roy.
"I should have listened to you Roy, I did go down too fast, I thought I could do it, the terrain seemed stable enough."
"The land always seems stable enough Junior, but you can't go endangering yourself while you try to get to the victim, you getting hurt helps no one."
"You're right Roy, it won't happen again,"
"You're right about that pal, now lets get you up."
By now the stokes had arrived and the victim from the crash was in the back of a police cruiser. The lines from above secured the stokes to the engine and Johnny was ready to be pulled up.

The ride to Rampart was a smooth one, with Johnny feeling foolish all the way for his own self-induced accident. He knew that the wrath of Dr. Brackett was going to be strong and he was not looking forward to it.
The arrival to Rampart was typical and judicious as Dixie winked at Roy and ushered them into treatment room 2.
"Well Johnny, I see you are our visitor again, I hope this is not going to be a habit. Unfortunately, I am too busy to look at this knee, which I would say is severely sprained and in need of 6 weeks of splinting. I am going to hand you over to someone who needs practice in splinting and will be very careful
With that, Dr. Brackett turned on his heel, as did Dixie, leaving a very perplexed Johnny and Roy in their wake.
"We'' Johnny, it looks like I get to get some practice in today after all" shouted a jubilant Dr. Morton as he donned gloves and happily slapped his hands together.
Roy left the room giggling, knowing that his partner was in good hands, but definitely not the hands he expected to be in! Perhaps this would teach him a lesson in caution!
