Nurse Carol's POV

by

Jane Royce

Trustworthy, that's what I am. People can trust me. Dixie can count on me to cover shifts, Dr. Brackett can count on me to run tests, stay with patients and hand him instruments. Everyone looks at good old Carol, nurse to the nurses. I am all things to all people.

I wish though that one of the handsome paramedics that visited so often, bringing their patients in for us to treat, would stop and ask about me. Ask me how my day is going, they way they always seem to ask Dixie. I am older then Dixie, I have seen more than her, and have been on the job more then she has, so what makes her so special?

I want to experience some excitement, some thrills on the job! I want to be a firefighter! I know I could do it, I just know I could! I wish I could get the chance, I wish I could prove my strength and willingness to do a good job! I can do it, I just know I can! Women aren't firefighters though. One day, they will be. One day there will be many women firefighters and one day, we will be looked upon as equals.

Until then, I wait for the one time when someone asks me if I have a last name. If I have a pet, or a boyfriend. One day....it will happen.

"Paging Nurse Carol, you are needed in the ER..."
