Big Trouble
By Nancy Newman
"Roy," Johnny said, "she gonna kill us." Johnny was pacing back and forth as he looked at the dented door on the squad. It had been hit by an errant baseball while they were at their last run.
"No she won't," he replied
"Wanna bet." "Tangee had a fit the last time we damaged the squad." Tangee was the mechanic at the County garage and she was extremely protective of the squads and was very vocal in her displeasure of how the guys treated them.
"Look, you're completely overreacting," Roy continued, "Once we explain what happened, everything will be just fine." "I don't know why you are getting so worked up over a small dent in the door."
"That's easy for you to say, she likes you," Johnny ranted. "It's not a pretty sight when she gets mad, and she's gonna get mad over this "small dent" as you put it."
"I'll have to take your word for it," Roy said as he got back in the squad and started it. Johnny jumped in and picked up the radio.
"LA, Squad 51 is 10-8 to the maintenance yard."
"10-4, 51," replied dispatcher Sam Lanier
Roy pulled into the maintenance yard and he and Johnny got out.
"Roy let me handle this, maybe if we're lucky she'll only get upset at one of us," Johnny said.
"If that's what you want, it's fine with me," Roy replied as he grabbed the H.T.
They found Tangee working on Squad 36 and mumbling something about paramedics never getting within 10 feet of her squad again.
"Good morning Tangee, how are you?" Johnny asked as he turned on the charm.
Tangee raised her head up from what she was doing and looked at Johnny before she spoke.
"Gage, I don't have time for idle chitchat so you can stop trying to charm me and tell what you did to my squad," Tangee told him.
"Well," Johnny began nervously, " I didn't do anything, it just sort of happened on it's own." "Roy and I were on a run near the park earlier this morning and there was an accident."
"What kind of accident?" Tangee asked him
"The kind that involve baseballs," Johnny explained
"Okay Gage, spill it," Tangee said as she put down the wrench and crossed her arms in front of her.
"There isn't a whole lot to tell," Johnny continued, "we were finishing up a run near the ball field at the park and when we came out there was a dent in the passenger side door."
"Is that it?" Tangee asked
"Yes, it is. There isn't much else to tell since we didnít see it happen," Johnny said.
"Okay, let's go take a look," she said
The three of them walked over to the squad to inspect the damage. Tangee knelt down to get a better look at the dent.
Johnny was nervous and pacing, waiting for Tangee to get upset about the damage. Roy was amused watching how freaked out his partner was becoming.
Tangee rubbed her hand across the dent to see how deep it was. She sighed and then stood up. Johnny braced himself; sure that Tangee would let them have it.
"It's not as bad as I thought it would be," she continued, "it shouldn't take too long to fix."
"That's great, isn't it Johnny?" Roy said.
Johnny was stunned speechless. He was all prepared to be read the riot act; instead Tangee didn't even raise her voice. It rather unnerved him.
"What's the matter Gage, cat got your tongue?" asked Tangee
"Uh..no," Johnny continued, "I just thought you'd be a little more upset."
"Why, it was an accident. No reason to get upset," she replied. Tangee loved the fact that she was keeping Gage on his toes, next time he wouldn't get off so easy.
"I'm glad to hear you feel that way," he said, as a big smile came across his face.
"From now on you two should be more careful where you park the squad," Tangee told them. "You wouldn't want to have anything like this happen again, because next time I might not be so nice about it."
"No problem, Tangee," Roy said, "We'll definitely be more careful from now on."
"That's what I like to hear," she continued, "now, get out of here so I can work."
With that, the guys left so that Tangee could make the necessary repairs to the squad.
Author's note: I had a great time writing this, it was lots of fun! I thought that it would be a neat twist to see Johnny sweat it out a bit.
