Dixie's POV
by
Jane Royce
Another day, more trauma.
Where do I begin? Ah, with everyone's favorite paramedic. John Gage. John Gage is a smart guy, he knows his stuff and he's confident about it. He's always butting heads with Dr. Morton and enjoys challenging him. Oh how those two can argue. No one ever wins. My nurses always know when Johnny's on shift, he tracks them down and pursues them relentlessly. All new nurses are treated to a dose of the Gage charm whether they want it or not. I guess I am impervious to the charm, because it just doesn't wash with me.
Roy, now there's a solid man with a heart of gold. He is so devoted to his wife Jo-Anne and his children. He's a capable paramedic and wears his heart on his sleeve when he least expects to. He is wise, and tolerant of his partner and all of his partners antics and schemes. If I am hurt in an accident, Roy is my choice paramedic, he's just a calming influence on all of the chaos that surrounds him
Dr. Morton, well he's got a lot in common with John Gage but the two would deny that! He is impetuous, opinionated and savvy. He's a capable doctor but he is influenced by his environment in a negative way. He just takes things too personally and feels like the underdog when really, he's an equal. He needs to stop feeling as though he has much to prove, when in fact, he's already done so.
Dr. Early. He's a gem who has been through years of polishing. He's a kind soul who can calm the most upset child but then be firm with the next patient if he needs to be. He's a grandfather-type, a father-type and a big brother all rolled into one. He's my 'go to' guy, he listens, understands and is smart on top of it all.
Dr. Brackett is a high strung go-getter who has to fight for respect among his colleagues who would just as soon see him fail at his project of launching the paramedic program and the concept of Emergency medicine. His focus is so strong that he doesn't see the admiration in my eyes, he doesn't know my true feelings toward him. I have to keep it to myself. His focus must not be divided.
My student nurses are all wonderful to work with, some need more guidance than others but my hope it to whip them into shape so that they can be steady on the job and anticipate the needs of the doctors they work with. They will carry the torch when I retire, and I need to make sure they are ready.
Trauma 1 is full now, it's time to stop daydreaming and begin yet another day at Rampart.
