Crash!

Crash!

"What the hell...." said Roy, who was very surprised by a loud noise that sounded like it came from downstairs.

" I don't know," said Joanne, "Sounded like the entertainment center being knocked over."

They both ran for the stairs expecting to hear a scream from one of the kids shortly because they were, Oh! NO!, under the entertainment center!

Instead The next sound they heard was somebody pounding on their front door. Roy opened the door .A very out of breath Christopher said, “DAD!, Some one Just ran into Uncle John bigtime!"

"Joanne, call 911 now!"said Roy as he slipped into his shoes and headed for the door.Roy found two vehicles that looked like they tried to get up close and personal mighty quick, right in front of his house. He ran to John. "Johnny, you alright man!" said Roy anxiously. All he got was a moan . Roy tried to open the driver’s door but it was crushed shut. The glass was almost gone so Roy took his shirt off and brushed the glass to the ground. He then reached in to check John's condition.

He was thinking ABC and didn't noticed that he cut his side on a jagged piece of glass that was still in the frame. John had pulse and he was breathing always a good sign in any patient. Roy noticed John's right leg didn't look good it was bent in way a leg is not suppose to bend.

Roy had a ugly looking huge slash on in his left chest. He didn't even noticed it until he saw the blood and knew it wasn't John's. His side was covered in blood. “I don't feel so good,” he admitted as he sloutched against the car and fell to the ground. “This was a smooth move,” he said to himself now the squad has got to take care of me too. Roy was holding pressure on his side as blood was oozing out between his fingers.

The engine and squad pulled up to the scene and signed off with L.A. Roy managed to get up and walk over to the Squad. "Roy, what happened here? How bad are you hurt?" asked Bob, one the paramedics from Squad 36.

Roy steady himself on Bob's shoulder,"I wasn't involved. I cut myself trying to help John," Roy stated.

Bob helped Roy to the back of the squad where he could sit down and Bob could take a look at that bad gash on Roy's side that hadn't even begun to stop bleeding. "Ah, let me guess, you took your shirt off to break and brush the glass out of the driver's side window so you could get to John, right?"Bob said kiddingly as he looked at Roy's side.

Roy was about to answer when Bob's partner asked for some help. Bob gave Roy a pressure dressing and had him hold it on his side. Bob asked Roy ,"You going to be O.K. sitting there?"

"Yes, besides here comes my wife.  She can help me if I need anything. You go help get John extricated," Roy stated to Bob.

Bob ran over to John's car. "How can I help?" he asked Bellingham, his partner for the day."I needed someone to hold immobilization on John. While we pull back the dashboard with the come-along and chains," Bellingham commanded. "John's wedged in here pretty good."

Bob, who is a whole lot skinnier than Bellingham, squeezed into the car and sat behind John in the back seat and kept his head from moving. While Bellingham and Engine 36 prepared to pull the dashboard back, Bob tried to talk to John, "Hey,John can you hear me, man? Wake up you have been in an accident."

John began to rouse."What happened?" inquired John.

"That's what I would like to know,"said Bob "It looks like someone hit you head on right in front of Roy's house...Don't move O.K.? You know the routine,"Bob reminded John of something he knew too well.

John tried to remember what had just happened. He remembered being headed for Roy's house because he was going to help him with his yardwork this weekend. What happened next was not clear? "Is anybody else hurt?” asked John. He hated the idea that he may have hurt someone. He supposed to be helping people, not hurting them,  he thought.

"No," Bob said sarcastically, "There was a older man in the car that hit you . He was on your side of the road. He was drunker than a skunk. You know the old saying John, 'Drunks and fools they never get hurt in MVAs'." Bob finished his explaination. John winced as the dashboard was released. Bob calmly told John, "There now,now that is out of the way we will have you out off here in no time.”

John looked out of the front of the car where the windshield once was and saw Roy with his shirt off being tended to by Joanne.  Bob was busy preparing him to get him out the car but he asked him something anyway."Roy wasn't involved in this accident, was he?"

"No, he wasn't," stated Bob. "He was hurt trying to see how bad you were hurt. He took his shirt off and broke the glass in the driver side window to check you out because, as you can see, your door was demolished."

John looked at the remains of his door just loosely hanging on the hinges after being ripped open by the Jaws.

"Roy got a nasty gash on his left side when he peered in the window to check on you," Bob continued.

"Is he hurt bad?" John asked with concern in his voice.

"I don't think so. I think its his pride more than anything. He told me he was trying to help, but instead became part of the problem. I told him that it is never a problem to take care of one of LAcoFD's finest," Bob stated.

With that remark John said, "Thanks alot now my partner has a even bigger head than normal,"John resounded.

"Well," Bob said "You can't be hurt too bad if you are joking about your partner."

"Who's joking?" returned John glibly but suddenly became more serious as they tried to move him.. "Easssy" he said through clenched teeth.

Bob and Bellingham slid him on to the backboard and secured him. They carried him over to the waiting stretcher. As they passed Roy and Joanne, John looked and his friend and stated matter of factly. "Coming, partner?"

"Right behind you, junior."Roy stated.

Joanne interjected,"You guys! If it isn't one thing it's five others. You guys are always into something, good or bad.”

Roy about to return with a good come back for Joanne's remark but as he went to stand up he said, “Whoa!” He suddenly sat back down.

"What’s wrong, hon?” Joaane asked.

"I suddenly feel very dizzy again."

Joanne called to Bellingham for some assistance.

"What's wrong? Are you coming with us or what?" Bellingham stated jokingly but became more serious as he noticed Roy was looking little pale.

"I would be glad to stand up if I knew what direction was uuuppp." With that remark Roy fainted.

Bellingham and Joanne guided him to the ground." He must have lost more blood than we thought." he told Joanne. He was trying to reassure both of them. He called for the scoop stretcher from one of his fellow firemen. They quickly unlocked it and put both pieces under him then secured it. He told the EMT, who had come to help, that he would re-assess Roy in the back of the truck. They lifted it after securing him with the straps provided.

Roy came to as they were carrying him to ambulance."Welcome back to the land of the living." said the EMT "

Thanks. I wish I felt better."

"You will, once we get some fluid into you, "said Bellingham who was happy to see that Roy had awakened.

In the ambulance Bob was working on John, getting him stripped down so he could fully assess his injuries Bob found a bruise over John's left collarbone and the bruise continued down his chest in a diagonal pattern. "Does your left shoulder hurt or chest at all?" he asked

"My shoulder hurts a little but my chest only hurts when I take a deep breath."

"Looks like you have a seat belt injury, my friend, besides your broken leg. I don't want to imagine what would have happpened if your seat belt hadn't stopped you," Bob stated.

"Me either," stated John.

Bellingham was busy getting a set of vitals on Roy as they were already enroute to the hospital. He started an IV on Roy so he could get back some of the fluid he had lost.

John also got an IV as a precaution because of his chest wound and his broken leg.

"Rampart, this is squad 36. How do read?" Bob stated in an authoritative voice.

"We read you loud and clear.Go ahead with your traffic,"said Dr. Morton over the radio.

"We are inbound with two male patients. Patient  #1 is a 32 year old, restrained driver, victim of a head on collision. His vitals are B/P 110/80, pulse 120, respiratory rate 16 and non labored. His injuries are a left fractured tib/fib which is splinted, a seat belt injury involving his left clavicle and chest. He is fully immobilized and I have an IV started as a precaution," finished Bob.

"10-4, 36. Is Patient #1 having any chest pain?" inquired Dr Morton .

"Yes, but only when he takes a deep breath," Bob stated.

"10-4,go ahead with Patient #2," returned Dr Morton.

Bob handed the mic to Bellingham for report on Roy.." Patient #2 is a male, 37 years old who has a deep laceration on the left side of his chest. This appears to be his only injury. Vitals are B/P 100/70, pulse 120, RR 20 and nonlabored. There is a pressure bandage covering the wound. Breath Sounds are diminished but appear to be equal. He has had syncopal episode just before being loaded into the ambulance. I have a large bore IV started running wide open and Patient is on high flow O2," reported Bellingham.

"10-4,36 is your Patient conscious?"

"10-4, Rampart, he is and alert," replied the paramedic.

"10-4, 36. See you when you get here,” replied Dr.Morton.

Bellingham continued work on their star patients as they neared Rampart. They could see that they had Joanne Desoto in close tow behind the Squad.

"Roy, thanks man for trying to help me,"said John thankfully

"A lot of good I did you. I'm laying right beside you on the squad bench," Roy sighed.

"Hey, I know but at least you tried," responded John. "How you feeling now that Bellingham has been able to replace some that fluid you lost?"inquired John.

"Not good, I feel as if I could throw up,"said Roy.

"Really?" said Bob as he and Bellingham unstrapped the backboard from the squadbench and tilted it on its side so that Roy wouldn't aspirate.

Thank-fully all it was dry heaves. Bob looked out the side window as they put Roy back on his back.Thank goodness for small favors we are at last at Rampart. It seem to take an eternity to get here, thought Bob.

They were met by Kel and Dixie at the ER entrance.

"Hi, guys. Any changes enroute?" asked Kel.

Bob replied, "Yes Roy threw up just before we got here."

"Roy?" asked Kel

"Yeah, Roy DeSoto," stated Bob as they pulled the stretcher out with Johnny on it.

"Johnny too? What happened?"  asked Dix. She was asked to stay with Roy as they wheeled John in to the ER. They said they would be back for Roy in two seconds. Roy looked pale "Hey, Roy what happened?" asked Dix.

"Johnny was hit by a drunk driver in front of my house.  When I went over to help him, I cut myself on a shard of broken glass in the window," Roy explained.

"Well trouble seems to find you guys anywhere." Dixie stated.

At that moment Joanne and two medics from #36 appeared at the back of the ambulance. "Hon,I'm here how are you feeling, any better?" asked Joanne genuinely concerned about her husband.

"Not really," Roy said.

Bellingham and Bob wheeled Roy into treatment 2 where Dr Morton and Carol were waiting.

************************************************************

Both paramedics ended up in surgery. John because of badly fractured left leg. It was going to needs some pins to heal straight. This was the same leg he had broken a couple years ago when he was hit by a car. Roy needed surgery because he had lacerated several intercostal arteries all along his ribs and he wasn’t only bleeding externally but internally. They both ended up in ICU for three days.

The ICU nurses were familiar with John and got familiar with Roy. By the time they were discharged from ICU to the Surgical Floor, they had gained a reputation that even Chet Kelly would have tough time competing against.

John had learned quite by accident that his cardiac monitor was sensitive to any movement,so his favorite joke was to tap one the electrodes on his chest to make his heartbeat appear to be all screwed up. No matter what Karla, his nurse, said John kept occasionally tapping on his electrodes. Karla was getting mad. She even asked David the night nurse what to do. John was acting like a little kid with a new toy. Karla finally got an idea about what to do the next time he played his game. Karla would play too.

John got bored and started tapping his electrode again. Karla and Dave burst in the room. They flattened the bed with the CPR button (which drops head of the down at the same time it raises it up to half way for CPR.) Karla grabbed a pair fo uincharged Defib paddles and put them on John's chest as if she was going to Defibillate him. She said,"YOU LIKE PLAYING WITH YOUR TOYS AND I LIKE PLAYING WITH MINE WANT TO SEE WHO WINS!"

John was very red with embarrassment and quietly said,"Nope."

That was the end of the tapping.

Dave went into room 7 where Roy was and told him the story while he got Roy packed up to go to his new room.

"That doesn't surprise me," Roy replied. "John and Chet are always playing practical jokes on each other. I think its because they are such good friends and that's their way of showing it."

"That explains a lot," said Dave "John is  probably hitting on Karla."

"Yep sounds like he is," replied Roy.

"John is going to be disappointed when he finds out Karla is married and expecting her 2nd kid," explained Dave.

Roy resounded, "Really?"

"Yeah," said Dave." They just found out two weeks ago that she is two months pregnant," Dave said happily.

"Johnny should know better than to mess with a pregnant ICU nurse whose hormones are raging busily helping to create a perfect enviroment for a new life," scolded Roy. "He always is telling me you can always spot a pregnant female a mile away because they are so emotional. One of these days he is going to get his face slapped because he going to say that to the wrong person," stated Roy emphatically.

Dave heartily agreed.

Soon Roy and John were moved down to the 2nd floor, to share a room together while they continued to recooperate.

***********************************************

A couple of days passed and Roy was ready to go home and John was ready for Outpatient Physical Therapy. As Joanne was helping Roy to get ready to leave. Roy gave told Johnny the low down on Karla. Roy began "Your nurse up in ICU, John..."

Roy didn't have a chance to finish when John cut in "What about Karla? What's wrong with her? I think she did a very good taking care of yours truly."

"Would you shut-up and let me finish!"

"She was emotional, wasn't she?"

"ROY!" Joanne said admonishing her husband for saying something something like that.

"Yeah.” said John “It was like she was pregnant or something," John said sarcatically.

"Exactly," quipped Roy.

"NO," John said, astonished that he hadn't picked up on it earlier."I better go up when I have a chance and apologize."

John spent one more day in the hospital, after Roy was discharged.

**********************************************************

A week later after his Physical Therapy, John hopped into ICU on his crutches hoping that Karla was working. He knew she worked nights but you never know, maybe she was doing some over time or something.

She wasn’t working but was there picking up her check.

”John,” Karla said with surprise. ”Didn’t you get enough of this place last week? Back so soon?” quipped Karla.

“Cute Karla,” John responded.

“Can you and I talk for a minute or two?” asked John sheepishly.

“Sure, John,” stated Karla.

Why don’t a find a wheelchair for you and we will go down to Cafeteria for a cup of coffee,” Karla continued as she found a wheelchair for John so she could wheel him downstairs.

Karla sat down at the table with John with two cups of soda in her hands, it was too hot for coffee.

“So John, whats up?” Karla asked as she took a drink of soda.

“I wanted to apologize for being a total pain in the butt when you were taking care of me last week,” John said apologetically.

“Don’t give it a second thought John. You know us pregnant females.... We are so emotional,” Karla said trying to hold back laugh.

John starred back at her with one of his wierd looks. “HUH?” he said. “Did Roy talk to you?” he inquired.

“Yes, he did,” admitted Karla.

“He thought you were going to be to embarrassed to come apologize to me so he came himself,” she said.

“Roy said that your pranks were your way of saying that you like someone,” Karla continue.“He also said that you have an ongoing feud with one the other firemen. I’m honored that you think of me in this way,.” she stated.

John finished the last bit of his soda and returned, "That wasn’t as hard as I thought it was going to be, stewing about it was worse then doing it,” John resigned.

Karla replied, “ Your partner Roy help calm me down alot, he is a pretty special man you are lucky to have him for a partner.”

“That is something that goes without saying, I found that out on several occasions,” replied John without even thinking.

With that remark Karla wheeled John up to lobby to meet his ride home, Joanne DeSoto.
